THE VALUE OF A GOOD FRIEND Every year a few marathon swimmers drown. That seems really odd as these are trained, experienced swimmers, much stronger than the average swimmer. The problem though is that during their marathon swims, they are hit repeatedly with waves, and after time, they begin to tire and start “swimming down” – with their head staying longer and longer in the water until they eventually drown. Why do they “swim down”? Because the water is calmer down there, with no “attacking waves”. What would have helped these swimmers to stay alive and reach their goal? A spotter remaining close by in a boat. These spotters’ jobs are to stay close to the swimmer, ensuring that they are keeping their head above the water so that they can finish the race. How many “spotters” do you have in your life? Friends who truly care for you and who act as personal coaches, cheering you on when you seemly are bombarded by “waves” of opposition or depression of one kind or another? And, more importantly, do you listen to what they have to say, or do you just try to go it alone? Never underestimate the value of a good friend!
