BIASES & PREJUDICES: The lives of many of us could be compared to the making of a clay vase. When the clay is soft, the potter shapes, molds and throws it. The potter then puts it into a kiln and fires it. It is then no longer possible to re-shape it. We are “shaped” by our experiences as we go through life. Unfortunately, many of us allow the fires of prejudice to harden us so that it becomes very difficult for us to re-shape our thinking or try to understand someone else’s point of view.

A farmer once went to the county fair with a pumpkin that was the exact size and shape of a two-gallon jug. His pumpkin won the blue ribbon. Such beliefs can put a lid on potential. You might be a golfer who averages 90 for 18 holes. One day you’re on your way to a 70 at the 16th hole. You say to yourself, “This isn’t like me!” Hearing that, your subconscious makes sure you put the next ball into the woods or the sand. At the end of 18, you have your usual 90 average. “That’s more like me” you say to yourself. Your subconscious will work hard to match whatever you believe on the inside with what you see on the outside.

How you look at a situation is very important, for how you think about a problem may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. When you get discouraged or depressed, try changing your attitude from negative to positive and see how life can change for you. Remember, your attitude toward a situation can help you to change it – you create the very atmosphere for defeat or victory.

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80’s arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry. The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health. He told me that she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease. As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late. He replied that she no longer knew who he was, that she had not recognized him in five years now. I was surprised, and asked him, ‘And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’ He smiled as he patted my hand and said, ‘She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.’ I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought, ‘That is the kind of love I want in my life.’ True love is neither physical, nor romantic. True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be. The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything they have. Happiness is an inside job. It has everything to do with your thinking and attitude.

IT’S ALL ABOUT BELIEFS: It wasn’t until 1865 that the Matterhorn was first climbed. Four men in the party died during the descent. It took 30 years and 20 deaths before Everest was first successfully climbed and it was generally considered “Impossible without oxygen.” In 1975, 2 men made it. Mount Blanc used to take 3 days to climb. Last year, a climber did it in 7 hours. Now, athletes actually have a race to the top of Matterhorn, where they start at 2000 feet and run to the peak, up 35 degree inclines at a rate of 1500 meters an hour.

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.

How we feel lonely, sometimes to the point of tears, but we don’t let those tears come because we are not supposed to cry. Or how we feel a surge of love for a partner but we don’t say anything because we’re frozen with fear of what those words might do to the relationship. Instead, don’t be afraid to turn on the faucet. Wash yourself with the emotion. It won’t hurt you, it will only help you. If you let the fear inside, if you pull it on like a familiar shirt, then you can say to yourself, “All right, it’s just fear, I don’t have to let it control me. I see it for what it is.” Same for loneliness; you let go, let the tears flow, feel it completely-but eventually be able to say. “All right, that was my moment with loneliness. I’m not afraid of feeling lonely, but now I’m going to put that loneliness aside and know that there are other emotions in the world and I’m going to experience them as well.” I don’t want to live life in a state of fear, loneliness, anger, depression or other negative emotions. I want to fully immerse myself in them, know they exist and then detach from them so that I can then experience the joy and peace and happiness and love that life has to offer more fully. I want to experience each happening, accept it, get to a peaceful place, and then let it go.

Take 15 golden minutes making positive affirmations: At the beginning of each day, take 15 minutes to think about the positive actions you intend to take that day. At the end of each day, take 15 minutes to think about what happened good that day and what new things you learned that day.
